1. Chartered Accountant (CA)

As a Chartered Account (CA) you will work in the field of finance and business. The duties of a CA include auditing, analyzing and verifying the accounts of your client(s) and providing them with a clear financial picture. A CA may also be called upon to provide counsel on investments, general taxation as well as act as executors and trustees.

An Indian CA can practice in another country as an auditor or tax professional, if the country accepts the CA qualification issued by ICAI or they might have to pass an equivalency exam to practice in the respective country. For instance, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is a professional who has passed the CPA examination administered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and fulfilled all of the education and work experience requirements associated with taking the exam. The CPA credential is issued solely in the U.S. whereas the CA credential is administered by Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).Both CPAs and CAs focus on providing financial services like auditing and taxation work for clients – either personal, small business or large corporations.

Career Path

The Chartered Accountant (CA) program can be pursued by students who have chosen any stream at the 12th grade. The stages to complete the program are -IPCC, IPC, article ship (a 3-year internship) and final. You can either start immediately after 12th or join the IPCC program or you can complete your graduation and join the IPC level directly.

2. Investment Analyst

An Investment Analyst is someone who has an excellent understanding of various financial investments. As a professional in this field you will produce research and provide buy, sell or hold recommendations for securities. Based on this knowledge you will guide your client(s) investment manager in buying and selling securities directly. These professionals are also known as Financial Analysts or Securities Analysts.

To become an investment analyst, it is recommended that you complete your graduation in programs such as Commerce or Business Administration. After graduation, you can pursue courses such as CFA, CIMA or CA. You can also opt to do an MBA in Finance.

3. Business Analyst

A business analyst is someone who guides a business in improving their products and services using data analysis. They bridge the gap between IT and business with the aim of improving overall efficiency. Being such a professional, you will work closely with both these teams and create new models to support business decisions.

4. Cost Accountant (CMA)

The role of a cost accountant is to manage the costs of all business related activities including raw material and labour costs. You will be in charge of tracking the costs and designing strategies to help the organization reduce expenses and increase the profits. Cost accountants usually work for accounting firms or retailing or manufacturing companies.

Career Path

In order to become a cost accountant you have to clear 3 levels of the Cost & Management Accounting Course offered by the Institute of Cost Accountants in India (ICMAI). The levels of the course are - Foundation, Intermediate and Final. There are two entry points for this course. You can either join the Foundation level course immediately after 12th or join the Intermediate level course after your graduation.

5. Company Secretary (CS)

A Company Secretary (CS) is recognized by the law as a legal advisor to the company and plays a major role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the company. As a CS you will be in charge of guiding your client(s) in best practices in corporate governance. You will also be responsible for advising the client(s) on other aspects such as compliance of legal aspects, negotiation and conciliation in commercial disputes. In a company, a CS also acts as a bridge between the board of directors and shareholders.

Career Path

The Company Secretary (CS) program can be pursued by students who have chosen any stream, except Fine Arts at the 12th level. This course is offered by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and the stages to complete the program are - foundation, executive (intermediate) and professional (final). You can either start immediately after 12th or join the Foundation program or you can complete your graduation and join the Executive level directly.

6. Marketing Manager

If you are someone who enjoys being creative and working with products and services offered by an organization, this is the right profession for you. A marketing manager is in charge of creating brand awareness through activities like advertising and public relations. They also work to ensure that the marketing strategies are in line with the brand image as well as within the budget of the organization.

8. Sales Manager

A sales manager is responsible for meeting sales targets. They either work alone or in collaboration with a team of sales representatives. In this position, you will also have to develop strategies to maintain and increase the client base as well as provide regular reports on the current sales, revenue and expenses occurring.
