Overview:

Disaster management specialists are responsible for arranging resources in order to deal with emergency situations created by natural disasters such as flood, tsunamis, earthquakes, and tornadoes. The aim is to reduce harmful effects of all hazards, including disasters. They focus on the causes of disasters and how to minimise their impact. They are usually trained to minimise impact of disasters, respond to emergency needs of the people and the area, evacuation process, distribution of food and medical care for injured people.

Job Responsibilities:

Analyse and prepare for potential risks, such as outbreaks of infections or diseases, technical failure of electrical networks, major gas leaks and severe weather conditions
Complete risk assessments for a diverse range of sites, such as chemical factories, nuclear factories, city centres and major sporting venues
Respond to incidents, such as natural disasters, and assess the situation and level of response required
Impart safety training to staff in local authorities or businesses
Raise awareness of public safety issues through attending events, developing information and delivering special projects
Conduct surveys to determine the types of emergency related needs that will need to be addressed in disaster planning, or provide technical support to others conducting such surveys.
Consult with officials of local and area governments, schools, hospitals, and other institutions in order to determine their needs and capabilities in the event of a natural disaster or other emergency.
Coordinate disaster response or crisis management activities such as ordering evacuations, opening public shelters, and implementing special needs plans and programs.
Design and administer emergency/disaster preparedness training courses that teach people how to effectively respond to major emergencies and disasters.

Work Life:

They work with various agencies to ensure that normal support for local communities continues in the event of an emergency
They spend a lot of time coordinating with various government agencies and drafting emergency response plans.
They organise training for first responders and make sure all persons involved are updated about emergency evacuation plans.
Although most of them work in an office, they also typically travel to meet with various government agencies, community groups, and private companies.
Some of them may be on call for days or even weeks. And, they must be prepared to travel on short notice and expect long workdays of indefinite stay when they arrive
