Overview:
Stenography is the practice or act of typing, spoken words through shorthand using a stenotype machine. Once the notes are entered into the machine by the stenographer, they are translated by computer software into English. Stenographers usually work with various ministers or government offices where documenting speeches or preparing official communication is crucial. Stenographers are responsible for recording the proceedings, proof reading the script and preparing the final document. They also take care of administrative functions like fixing appointments, arranging meetings, travel planning etc. Fast and accurate typing skills is a must for this profession.
Career Path:
Some of the Diploma courses can be completed after 10th grade. However, it is recommended to complete 12th grade to be eligible for certain government positions. Candidates interested in government jobs have to attend SSC or UPSC exams. Candidates are tested on their dictation, typing and transcription skills as part of these exams.

Government Jobs:
There are basically two grades in SSC Stenographer jobs with Central Government
- Stenographer Grade C, and
- Stenographer Grade D, under which comes Group X and Group Y Stenographers.
Stenographer Grade C and Grade D – Group X employees will be posted in various departments of Central Government in Delhi. While the Grade D – Group Y employees will be posted in various Central Government departments located in other parts of India.
