Overview:
Police officers are law enforcement authorities in a state. Their primary duty is to protect people and property. They are the people who ensure traffic rules are followed, patrol roads to prevent crimes and respond to emergencies. They document illegal activities and arrest or detain people involved in criminal activities.
In India, each state and union territory has its own separate police. To become a police officer one must complete 18 years and pass certain competitive exams. It would also help to be involved in sports at school, since police officers have to meet certain physical requirements like specific height, chest measurement etc.
Career as a Police Officer is regarded as one of the most prestigious positions in the society. If you have a passion towards serving society, then police services is the right career to pick.
Career Path:
Students can appear for State Selection Commission (SSC) examination or Police Recruitment Board Exams after 10th or 12th grade to join as Police Constables. The test includes sections on General knowledge and current affairs.
Once you join the police force, you can apply for higher post in department of police through promotions or by passing department tests or by appearing for State Public Service Examinations conducted by State
Graduates can look at joining at Sub Inspector level, by appearing for SSC examination.
In case you are looking at joining at a higher post, you can appear for State Public service examination. The pattern is similar to UPSC examination. Candidates who clear State Public service examination usually join the state police service at DSP level (Deputy Superintendent of Police).An officer joining as DSP might even become eligible for IPS role after 10 to 12 years of service.
