Overview:
The Indian coast guard is a multi-mission national organization responsible for conducting round the year real life operations at sea. An Indian Coast Guard Ship apprehends poachers, preserves marine biodiversity, saves human life and guides fishermen in peril. The coast guard works closely in cooperation with Indian Navy, the Department of Revenue (Customs), the Department of Fisheries and the central and State police forces. It is committed to protecting the Maritime and other national interests in the Maritime Zones of India. They also help with anti-smuggling operations, law enforcement in territorial as well as international waters, scientific data collection and National Defence during hostilities.
Career Path:
Sailor Entry can be through enrolment as Yantrik or Navik Ranks. Students who complete 10th grade can join at certain Navik Ranks. Completing 12th grade or Diploma is a requirement to join at other levels of Navik and Yantrik Ranks.
Officer level entry requires completing degree. The specialisations depend on the technical field or post that you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for a position in General Duty, degree in any field is acceptable. However, if you are applying for entry as Pilot Navigator, a commercial pilot licence is required.
The application process for all levels include attending written exams, interviews and medical and fitness tests. There may be certain physical requirements like height, weight, eye sight etc. for each level.
After recruitment, all personnel go through rigorous training at INS or INA training centres before being posted on duty. The duration of training may range between 6 months to 1 year.

Enrolled personnel who join the Indian Coast Guard join the forces at Sailor Ranks as a Yantrik (a technician) or a Navik (a sailor). Yantriks may serve either in the General Duty or Domestic branches of the Indian Coast Guard. Naviks work as sailors, weapons systems operators, communication specialists and divers. In the Domestic branch, naviks are hired as stewards, cooks, etc.

Selection to the various cadres of the Coast Guard are conducted every January and June for which the forms are filled six months in advance. Examinations are conducted in 2 phases.
Officer Selection
The Selection for the post of an officer in Coast Guard consist of two phases.
- Phase I – Preliminary selection board tests applicants in GK & IQ at Delhi, Mumbai, and Port Blair and Chennai .Successful graduate candidates should have passed XII with Physics and Mathematics. Female candidates can join after graduation only (any subject).
- Phase II – After qualifying Phase I candidates go through a final selection in New Delhi. The examination is a test of IQ, GK and Science. This is followed by interviews and medical examinations. A merit list is constituted and as per vacancies cadets are called upon for probation.
Women Entry Women are recruited in Coast Guard as officers in General duty as General Duty Pilot, Navigation, CPL Holders, Short Service entry etc. The selection process for women is similar to that of male candidates. The women officers are posted in non-sea going appointments. Unlike the other Armed Forces, the women officers in Coast Guard have the option to serve till superannuation, except for CPL holders and General Duty branch- Short service appointment.

Naviks Selection
Phase I– Shortlisted candidates are called for selection tests/interview; Candidates have the option of answering questions in English/Hindi. It’s a test of general mental ability followed by a test in English, mathematics, general sciences and general knowledge. Candidates are expected to qualify in all the papers and in aggregate. Results are declared on the same day.
Yantriks (technical) are tested for knowledge in their discipline.
Phase II– Successful candidates of the written exam are interviewed and tested for their physical efficiency. Qualifying in Physical Fitness Test is mandatory. Thereafter overall successful candidates have to undergo medical examination.
