Overview:

Geology is the study of earth. Geological findings are applied to the fields of remote sensing, resource mapping, and recycling technology. A “Geologist” is a specialized type of scientist who understands the history of the earth that includes solid and liquid matter that constitutes the Earth. A Geologist is also known as a Geophysicist, Geo-hydrologist, Engineering Geologist and Earth Scientist. Geologists study, earth processes such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, and volcanic eruptions.

Job Responsibilities:

Develop geological models of the earth's sub-surface to understand the geological structure, rock characteristics and likely distribution of oil or gas and monitor the acquisition of data to ensure consistent quality.
Perform detailed geological risk analysis of proposed exploration targets.
Plan and undertake an exploration drilling programme after collecting and interpreting all available data.
Supervise exploration work in deserts, ocean floors, riverbeds, mountains, etc.
Analyse information collected through seismic prospecting; examine surface rocks and samples of buried rocks, study information collected by satellites.
Identify rocks, minerals, and fossils
Conduct geological surveys, construct maps
Measure the earth’s gravity and magnetic field.
Research for locating oil, natural gas and minerals.
Work in laboratories to study samples from the earth or seabed.
Study the flow of oil and water through rocks.
In government departments they monitor waste disposal sites and water supplies.

Work Life:

At the beginning phase of their career, most geologists explore the field and do lab testing. They are paired with a “mentor” or “senior geologist,” to visit sites and learn how to take samples, label and store them
At office, they proofread, summarize professional articles and learn specific lab techniques.
Work life of a geologist depends on their individual speciality.
Geologists collect information in the field, from a seismic data and other sources to produce and present geological maps and reports.
Geologists often collaborate with drilling engineers at drilling sites on the basis of interpretation of the data and models developed.
Geologists who review land in the field or consult on environmental issues spend five to fifteen hours a day outdoors,
They also spend their day doing prospective development for the potential value of land sites for the oil and gas industry. They write reports recommending whether or not to purchase a particular plot of land.
