Overview:

A financial analyst provides financial plans and reports that enable companies to take investment decisions. Some financial analysts work in brokerage firms or securities industry providing analysis of market trends and equities. Other financial analysts work for large corporations and may be involved in analysing internal financial data and budgeting. Financial analysts are also known as business analysts. Most financial managers are usually employed in brokerage firms, banks, insurance companies, or as personal wealth managers by High Net worth Individuals.

Job Responsibilities:

Managing a company's financial accounting, monitoring and reporting systems
Providing and interpreting financial information and analysing trends.
Analysing competitors and market trends.
Managing budgets
Researching and reporting on factors influencing business performance
Liaising with auditors to ensure annual monitoring is carried out
Developing external relationships with appropriate contacts, e.g. auditors, solicitors, bankers and statutory organisations
Producing accurate financial reports to specific deadlines
Develop information to assess the present and future financial status of the firm
Plan and control the flow of funds within and outside of the organization
Work with top management to arrange for long term finance
Develop financial and economic policy, establish procedures, delegate authority, and oversee the implementation of these policies
Set up budgetary systems, financial services and make appraisals of the adequacy of accounting methods
Maintain liaison with banking personnel, financial institutions, treasury officials for sourcing funds, and control financial activities
Plan, coordinate and manage the financial operation for diversification of business operations
Carry out investment analysis
Source funds, issue management and viable project investments for success of a project

Work Life:

Most of the work involves dealing with financial records, preparing summaries in spreadsheets and reviewing information related to investment decisions.
The role of a financial analyst can vary enormously. In larger companies for instance, their role is more concerned with strategic analysis, while in smaller organisations, a financial analyst may be responsible for the preparation of accounts.
During the initial 3 to 4 years of work, they might have to put in long hours of work extending to 14 hours a day.
They also move into client facing roles as they rise up the corporate ladder.
They are expected to keep themselves updated about macro and micro economic trends in the economy.
