Overview:

Excise officers are government employees who are responsible for collecting taxes. The main task of these officers is to ensure that taxes levied on goods supplied are appropriately paid. They identify and pull up defaulters or smugglers who fail to pay these taxes. Presently the excise department only focuses on petroleum and liquor. This is a very important department in the Government of India, and these officers are selected with utmost care. They are required to appear for a selection process that includes written examinations and physical tests.

Career Path:

Stream of Study at 12th:	Students who wish to become excise officers can opt for any stream at the 12th level.

Eligibility Criteria:

Should be a citizen of India or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India
Should be between the age of 21 and 32 (exceptions applicable based on caste/category)
Should meet the physical requirements
Should have completed graduation with at least 55% marks in any stream from any recognized university

There are four different paths you can take to become part of the Excise department:

Group A: Successful completion of the Civil Service Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission is required to join the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) in the Income Tax branch or the Customs and Central Excise branch.
Group B: Successful completion of the Combined Graduate Level Examination conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is required to become Inspector of Central Excise, Prevention Officer, and Examiner, Executive Assistant, etc. Specific physical requirements should also be met to be eligible for this group.
Group C: Successful completion of the Combined Graduate Level Examination conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is required to become Tax Assistant, Lower Division Clerk, etc.

Job Responsibilities:

Excise officers are involved in assessment jobs in various branches of the Indian Revenue Service
They are incharge of assessing taxes in India as well as Singapore, UK, USA, etc.
These officers are also competent authorities to assess indirect taxes
They are primarily engaged in preventing smuggling and tax defaulting
Excise officers also have the adjudicating or appellate authority on tax matters
They may be deputed to other departments that come under the purview of the Government of India
These officers may also be required to participate in the administrative tasks related to the customs, central excise, service tax and other branches of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC)

Work Life:

These officers have to work both in an office and field environment
They will be required to deal with a range of individuals, including high profile people
Despite the challenges they may face, these officers have to ensure every individual adheres to the government laws
They have the power to search and seize any illegal wealth by any individual
These officers can also arrest someone on the same charges
Excise officers will also need to be involved in any probe or case being conducted concerning taxes
They patrol the nation and ensure no smuggling or piracy is carried out
