Overview:

A dancer or choreographer uses dance performance to express an idea. They start training at an early age and require years of formal training before giving live performances. A choreographer's work is to create and organize dance sequences in cinema, music videos, drama, theatre, as well as in private gatherings. They are professionals in dance who create not only dances, but themes with properties too. Nearly all choreographers began their career as dancers. Dancers usually specialise in a particular style like ballet, hip-hop, classical etc.

Dance Industry isn't a degree specific industry. A candidate who wants to seek job as a professor at a college or university might be required to complete Ph.D.

Job Responsibilities:

Audition for a dance part
Practice regularly for several hours to maintain flexibility
Learn new dance movements
Attend promotional events, such as photography sessions, for the production in which they are appearing
Work closely with choreographers and instructors to understand and modify dance movements.
Choreographers put together dance moves, choose music, costumes and direct movements of dancers. They also are in charge of administrative duties of the troupe or academy

Work Life:

A Choreographer or dancer remains busy, either practicing by themselves to maintain their flexibility or choreographing new dance moves or coaching.
They usually have long working hours during tours. During tours, they spend time practicing in the morning and performing in the night.
On a weekly to monthly basis, they attend costume fittings, photography sessions and makeup calls associated with dance performances and monitor the field of dance to remain aware of current trends and innovations.

5. Physical fitness is of paramount importance in this profession. Most dancers move on to being choreographers or teachers in their late 30’s due to this reason.
