Overview:

Architecture is study of structural drawings which are specially planned for making or constructing a building or bridges and any other structures which needs a construction. Architects are professionals who are responsible for the structure and design of places built. They work on public or private projects and design anything from a single room to an entire complex of buildings. The buildings can be any building like factories, hospitals, homes etc. Architects work very closely with their clients, so that they can customize designs based on the client’s specifications.

Career Path:

Most of the colleges require candidates to clear architecture entrance exams such as JEE-2 or NATA to gain entry into undergraduate course.

Stream of Study in 12th Grade/School:	Diploma with Mathematics as a subject
Degree/Graduation Courses: After completing graduation or during the time of graduation in Architecture, students are required to complete internship program either with some practicing architects or with an architecture firm to gain practical experience.	B. Arch for 5 years

Job Responsibilities:

Architects design new buildings & also modify existing buildings. They also help in the restoration and protection of old buildings.
Meet with clients to determine objectives and requirements for structures
Give preliminary estimates on cost and construction time
Prepare structure specifications
Direct workers who prepare drawings and documents
Prepare scaled drawings, either with computer software or by hand
Prepare contract documents for building contractors
Manage construction contracts
Visit worksites to ensure that construction adheres to architectural plans
Seek new work by marketing and giving presentations
They discuss about the aims, needs and financial plan of a project
Formulating, designing and presenting possible plans & drawings to the client
Recommending to the client the functionality of their plans
Working within the given budget and time limit
Bargaining with multiple service providers and contractors
Managing the project and ensuring timely and proper functioning of service providers
Supervise projects from its starting stage to its completion stage
Solving complications and matters that surface during construction stage
Ensuring that the ecological balance of the project is achieved

Work Life:

Usually architects stay inside the office for working, where they meet with clients, develop reports and drawings, and work with other architects and engineers.
They also visit construction sites to ensure the client’s objectives are met and to review the progress of projects.
Sometimes architects have to work for long hours, especially while facing deadlines.
Self-employed architects may have to work long hours, too, but they have more flexible work schedules.
They have their construction meetings at the job site.
In the first few years, prospective architects work as interns or research assistants to established architects. Duties include researching zoning regulations, working with subcontractors (electricians, plumbers, etc.), and drafting plans, either manually or with computer assistance. They work with partners or senior associates learning the practical end of turning plans into production.

Merits

1. The likelihood of boredom is very low as it is a creative field.
2. Job satisfaction is generally high among architects as most people who get into this profession are usually passionate about work.
3. Throughout your career, you get to learn about the different aspects of project development and what it takes to design and construct a building.

Demerits

1. It is subject to changes in the economy and the real estate market, and is thus volatile.
2. The educational, training and certification requirements are extensive, which may be cost prohibitive to some individuals.
3. The starting salaries or the pay scale of an architect is considered lower than average when compared with other professional careers
